From Hanoi to Ha Long Bay

Most visitors go by road. One cruise operator gives about 2.5 to 3 hours from Hanoi's Old Quarter to Ha Long by expressway, and the same from Noi Bai Airport. These are operator estimates, not guaranteed door-to-ship times. Pickup point and traffic change the figure, so allow a margin on the day of your cruise.

A day trip therefore means roughly 5 to 6 hours of travel plus the time on the boat. If that sounds like too much, an overnight cruise spends the travel once and gives you more time on the water. See the cruise comparison.

Buses, harbors and the airport

What each option means on the ground.

Limousine bus

One operator lists an 18-seat bus leaving Hanoi at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:30 am and coming back at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm. The drive takes 2 hours 10 minutes there. Drop-off covers Tuan Chau, the Sun port and hotels in Bai Chay. The same page shows VND 250,000 one way and VND 500,000 return in the table, and VND 260,000 as the product price, so confirm the fare. A limousine here means a bus with comfort seats, not a private car.

Other buses

A booking site lists a Ha Long limousine service of about 2.5 hours to Tuan Chau and Bai Chay for VND 250,000 to 300,000. It is a reseller's listing, not a confirmed timetable for your day, so check the departure with the company.

Two harbors, two places

One operator's cruise center is in Tuan Chau. Another operator uses the Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay. They are not the same place, so confirm the harbor before you book a transfer. The port lists VND 40,000 one way or VND 80,000 return, VAT included, since July 1, 2026. The fee is separate from the bay visit fee.

Tuan Chau and Bai Chay →

Van Don Airport

The airport operator presents Van Don as a gateway to Ha Long Bay and shows live flights. That is not a direct Hanoi connection or a daily international flight. Older reports list buses 14A and 14B between Van Don and Ha Long, but check that they run before you rely on them.

The seaplane

The press reported that the seaplane service would stop from April 1, 2026, yet a test website still lists transfers and scenic flights. Do not plan a trip around it.

Taxi and Grab in town

Grab has run in Quang Ninh since August 23, 2017. GrabCar shows the price before you ride and can raise it with demand, and GrabTaxi follows the meter, with tolls and parking added. Availability at every hour or at every pier is not assured.

How a day trip works

A typical day, using the published program of one operator.

Early start

Hanoi pickups leave in the morning, and the boat meets you at the harbor. Confirm the meeting point and time with your operator the day before.

On the water

The eight-hour day cruise example includes a breakfast and lunch buffet and visit fees. Stops depend on the route, see tours compared and the Sung Sot Cave guide.

Back to Hanoi

Return buses in the example left Ha Long at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm. Match the last bus or transfer to your boat's return time, and leave a margin for traffic.
